Background of the Study
Educational language policies are pivotal in shaping linguistic practices within academic environments. In Enugu, where the Igbo language holds significant cultural importance, recent reforms in educational language policies have sought to elevate the status of Igbo by integrating it into curricula, teacher training, and student assessments. These policies aim to balance global academic standards with local linguistic heritage, thereby ensuring that students develop proficiency in both Igbo and English (Okafor, 2023). The adoption of bilingual or multilingual education models has sparked debates regarding the effectiveness of language instruction and the preservation of indigenous languages. Educators and policymakers are challenged to create learning environments where the Igbo language is used effectively alongside global languages, promoting cultural identity and academic excellence. This study investigates how educational language policies in Enugu affect the usage of Igbo in schools and other academic settings, analyzing curricular changes, teaching practices, and student performance trends. By evaluating these impacts, the research will provide a clearer understanding of how policy decisions translate into linguistic outcomes in education (Ike, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite progressive reforms in educational language policies, the actual impact on Igbo language usage in Enugu remains unclear. Reports indicate that while policy initiatives promote bilingual education, challenges such as limited instructional resources, inconsistent teacher training, and socio-cultural pressures continue to hinder effective language use. These issues raise concerns about whether current policies sufficiently support Igbo language proficiency and cultural preservation. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the practical outcomes of educational language policies and their effects on daily language usage in academic contexts (Okafor, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine changes in Igbo language usage following educational policy reforms.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of bilingual instructional practices.

  3. To recommend improvements for enhancing Igbo language proficiency in schools.

Research Questions

  1. How have educational language policies affected Igbo usage in Enugu?

  2. What challenges do educators face in implementing bilingual instruction?

  3. How can policy reforms better support Igbo language development?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically assesses the impact of educational language policies on Igbo language usage, offering insights for educators, policymakers, and cultural advocates. The findings will help refine language planning in academic settings, ensuring that Igbo remains an integral part of the educational process (Okafor, 2023; Ike, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining educational language policies and their impact on Igbo language usage in Enugu and does not extend to other regions or languages.
